Jesus and the Samaritan Women - Part 3

Opening Prayer

God I want to worship You in spirit and in truth.

Read: John 4:19-24 English Standard Version (ESV)

19 The woman said to him, “Sir, I perceive that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you say that in Jerusalem is the place where people ought to worship.” 21 Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. 22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.”

The woman at the well asks Jesus to tell her where to worship.  The Samaritans were worshipping in one place and the Jews in another. Who was right?  Jesus challenges her and us in this passage to remember that the real and living God is not contained in a place or building.  God is spirit and if our worship is based only on something we see or a place we go then we have created a substitute for the true God.  To worship God in spirit and truth, our whole heart must be engaged and in line with God’s revealing of himself in the Bible.  Many times we create our own altars and decide how we want to add God to our lives.  But God seeks worshippers who are fully His.  What have you trusted in and worshipped in your life that is separate from God?

God “tells” us who He is through the Bible and “shows” us who He is through His Son Jesus Christ.

Are you worshipping the true God?  Have you taken the first step of turning from your own way and  receiving his son Jesus Christ?  There is no true worship of God without Jesus alive in your heart.

Closing Prayer

God please show me what I am trusting that is not of you.
