Lord, help me to rejoice today over what is important to you.
Read: Luke 15:8-10 (NIV)
8 “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins[a] and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?9 And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin.’ 10 In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”
It’s that time of year…football season! For a lot of people, this is the pinnacle of sports for them. They are rooting on their favorite high school, college or NFL team. There will be lots of high fives and celebrating great plays and wins. This story in Luke shows a big celebration, a town of friends and neighbors coming together to high five over a “win”…the finding of something valuable to the woman in the story. Jesus finishes this parable by saying this celebration is NOTHING compared to what goes on when a sinner repents. That is the ultimate lost and found story. It’s the whole reason Jesus gave up everything on the cross…so that lost sinners could find hope, restoration, and eternal life with the Father. It cost Jesus his life. It meant pain and agony beyond what we could ever comprehend. The price was high, but what extravagant joy and rejoicing in heaven when another “lost coin” is found. We as followers of Jesus get to be on the front line of looking for those lost coins. Imagine the party in heaven that we get to participate in.
The things of this world we celebrate are only for a season. Seeking lost coins is eternal. Do you need to rearrange your focus today?
Forgive me Lord for focusing my time on the things that don’t count for eternity. Show me who you want me to reach out to today for the kingdom.
