Living Out a Healthy Lifestyle - Part 5

Opening Prayer:

Lord, encourage my spirit today that I can live out the mission you have called me to.

Read: I Kings 19:4b-5

4 while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” 5 Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.”

Reflect:

In this passage we meet the prophet Elijah, who had just gained a great victory over the false prophets of Baal. He proved that God could bring down fire and their gods were silent to their pleas. To many people he revealed who was the One True God. After this happened, the queen Jezebel promised to kill Elijah as soon as she could. Even though Elijah was a great servant of the Lord, he still experienced a time of discouragement. We all do. As much as Satan would like us to believe that we are alone and weak in our depression, it is not true. While Elijah wanted to die and lays down in hopelessness, God was working. He sent an angel to encourage Elijah to “get up and eat” in v. 5. Using rest and eating foods that nourish us are ways to fight discouragement. God created rest and good food to strengthen and restore us. He is our hope and will always be there for us.

Apply:

If you are feeling discouraged today, make yourself a good meal and created some time in your day to rest. If someone you know is feeling discouraged, do this for them.

Closing Prayer:

God, you are my strength and everything I need. Every time I am discouraged and downtrodden, I know you will give me all I need.
