The Mission: Week 2 - Day 1

Lord, I praise and thank you for this day and all the blessings I receive by your grace and comfort. Your love pours into my life.  Help me share with others the joy of knowing you and the message of hope found only in Jesus. Amen.

 READ: Philemon 1:6-7 (NLT).

“And I am praying that you will put into action the generosity that comes from your faith as you understand and experience all the good things we have in Christ. Your love has given me much joy and comfort, my brother, for your kindness has often refreshed the hearts of God’s people.

There is an entire city and industry in the middle of the Nevada desert -- Las Vegas – based on the hope of getting much for little. Each day, thousands stand in front of gaming machines, put in a one-dollar coin and pull the lever hoping that from little, much will be returned.

The following words found in Luke 6:38 are part of “The Sermon of the Mount.” Right in the middle of this verse is the phrase “pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap.”  Some would say these words imply if we put in a little, God will pour out much, much more. Taking the words of Jesus in context reveals that this is about what God has done for us through Jesus, setting aside the judgment our sin deserves and pouring out grace in its place.

This word picture of a vessel being filled to overflowing bears a resemblance to the words of Paul to Philemon. Paul makes note of all God has poured into Philemon’s life and how the overflow has blessed Paul’s life and the lives of many others in the community of God. Consequently, there is both blessing for Philemon and those around him.

As God’s child, the overflow of blessings we receive when we walk out our faith will be seen and recognized by those around us. This overflow will refresh those we meet each day, spilling out the comfort, joy and kindness we receive from Christ. It is more than enough – shaken together and running over.

Lord, help me be a vessel filled with your love and comfort. As you fill me to overflowing, may those around me also be blessed with the blessing I have received from you. May all you do and are be seen in me. Amen.
