The Mission: Week 2 - Day 4

Throughout this day, may the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer. Amen.

READ: John 15:6 (NLT)

“Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers.  Such branches are gathered into a pile and burned.”

In verse 6, Jesus restates the obvious truth of his previous words – a branch cannot bear fruit or remain verdant by itself.  It must remain connected to its life source whether a vine, a tree, a plant, or a bush. Alone it will wither and die useful only as kindling.

This is a powerful and stark image. So, what does Jesus want his followers to understand? He wants us to understand, without a doubt, that, “Apart from me you can do nothing.”

In his letter to the church at Philippi, Paul stated this truth another way. He said he had learned a secret, a secret of living in every situation. Paul wrote in Philippians 4:13, “For I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.”

It is silly to think we can navigate life as a Christ follower without an ongoing personal connection to Jesus. To do so would be as likely as going into our yard, picking up a barren branch from an apple tree, bringing it into our kitchen and expecting it to produce apples for a pie. Jesus is our ongoing and indispensable source of life – through God’s word, through his Spirit, and through his grace.

Lord, this day may bring distractions and challenges. I pray, Holy Spirit, you will help me be mindful that you are with me. Remind me that I am able to stay steadfast whatever the day may bring.  Amen.
