Rewards in Heaven - Day 2

Father, today, let our hearts be open to hear what You have to say to us. Thank You for all the blessings and opportunities we have in front of us today.

READ: 1 John 4:16-17, NIV

“16 And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. 17 This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus.”

This world often muddles up what love really is. The world says it’s a feeling, an intense desire, or an affection. John tells us in the beginning of verse 16 to know and rely on the love God has for us. What is love, then? 1 John 4:10 (a little earlier than this passage) answers our question exactly: “This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.” How did God show us what love is? He sacrificed for us. We’ve been talking a lot about how awesome Heaven is and all the cool things that are going to “go down” when we get there. The most important part of the Heaven message is love. It is that God loved us and because of this lay-down, give-it-all-away love; we get to be with Him forever. This gives us so much confidence for the day of judgement! What now? What response do we have to this incredible love? John also answers this question so simply. In this world, we love like Jesus. Our Father emulated perfect love and His command is that we would show that kind of sacrificial love to others. And not just the people who are easy to love! He loved us when we turned our backs on Him and had a party with our sin. He loved us when we spit in His face and nailed Him to die. So, we are called to love in the same way He did. It’s not easy, but it’s so worth it.

Write down the main three “idea words” in this verse: Know, Rely, and Live (like Jesus). Also jot down ideas that will help you get better at each word.

God, You are so good to us. Your Son shows us through His sacrifice just how unfathomable Your love for us is. We pray that Your love would truly change us from the inside out. We pray that we would know and rely on Your love. Lastly, we pray that You would give us the strength to live this love out.
