Rewards in Heaven - Day 5

Father, let us listen to You today through Your Word of Life. May we see the eternal weight of who Your Son is.

READ: John 11:25-26, NIV

25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?”

One of the most important things to do when reading a passage of Scripture is to establish a context. In this passage we’re reading today, Jesus is speaking to one of His followers, Mary. She is the sister of Martha and Lazarus. At this time, her brother Lazarus had just died, and Jesus is comforting her. She tells him she knows that, “[Lazarus] will rise again at the resurrection at the last day.” (John 11:24). But Jesus has a hope that is closer that “the last day” He tells her that He is the resurrection and the life. What He means is that believing and trusting in Him brings true life, even after death. Because of what Jesus did on the cross, death is just a word for us who have invited Him into our hearts. It isn’t an end to anything when we put our trust in Him. Like He says, “whoever lives by believing in me will never die.” Only Jesus, and nothing we could do by our own power, can bring us eternal life. He wants us to run a good race: to follow Him in this resurrection from our time here on earth and into eternity.

How we apply today’s devotional is by answering the last question Jesus asks Mary. “Do you believe this?” Do you?

God, we know that the only way we can get to You is through your Son. He is the true resurrection and the only way we’ll ever get to Heaven. Thank You that we didn’t have to do this work on our own. Thank You that Your Son won for us eternal life and help us accept this as a gift.
