Make a Way for the One: Week 4 - Day 2
Lord, please open my heart to receive the word you would have me hear today.
Read: Luke 14:5 (NIV)
“Then he asked them, ‘If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?’”
When one of our children falls and gets hurt, our natural reaction is to exercise our compassion gene, treating their wounds, comforting them, and making sure they are secure until they heal. In today’s passage Jesus is teaching that, regardless of the circumstances, compassion should be a priority. Jesus continually demonstrates throughout the Gospels that he is passionate about finding those who are in need of being rescued.
It never ceases to amaze me how excited (and rowdy) the spectators can be at a large sporting event. Cheers, jeers, high fives, these all demonstrate that the participants are passionate about their team. Passion is also part of the word “compassion”. Jesus is passionate about finding those who need to be saved. His compassion was demonstrated when he gave his life for us, even while we were yet sinners. Who are we passionate about saving?
Father, as you lead us to grow and mature, help us to see how we may demonstrate your love through our compassion for all around us.
