Christmas - Hope - Day 3

Opening Prayer:

Dear Lord, as we continue our journey through this Christmas season we pray that you will guide us to see the Hope that comes from believing in your son Jesus, Immanuel, God with us.

Read: John 1:1-5 NIV

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”

In this passage of Scripture, we learn much about the promised Messiah.

  1.      He has existed from the beginning.  He was not a created being. The stability of Jesus “always being” is a great comfort.

 2.      He was with God. He is closer to God than anyone, knowing what God is thinking, doing, and planning.  As he directs us through his Holy Spirit we know his guidance has the backing of God.  Again, very reassuring.

 3.      He is the exact replica of God.  William Barclay in his commentary on John says that “Jesus is not just a replica of God, but he is exactly the same as God.”

 4.      He (The Word) created all things.  I like the way the Message says it, “Everything was created through him; nothing—not one thing! — came into being without him.”  All that we see and appreciate in our world today would not exist if Jesus had not created it.  This is mind-boggling to me, when I think of the intricacies of each individual and everything else that exists in the world.  Christ created them.

God has fulfilled his promise to us in the Messiah, the Word. We have hope because God keeps his promises!

Looking forward to Christmas, we need to focus on the Word:  Who has always existed with God, Who is God Himself, Who created all things, and Who is our Hope for all eternity.

Closing Prayer:

Our Lord Jesus, help us remember you have always existed, that you are right there with God and you are exactly the same as he is.  Not only that, but best of all, you are our reason for Hope by making it possible for us to have eternal life.  In your name, amen.
