A Mission and the Methods

Opening Prayer:

God help me to see the scriptures as more than an ancient collection of writings but a letter written for me, so that I may know You and Your will.

Read: 2 Timothy 3:14-17 NIV

“But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Not many of us upon deciding to climb Mt. Everest would choose to do so without a guide, and those brave enough to try likely wouldn’t choose to make the journey wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Most of us would find the above scenario hilariously absurd and rightfully so. I worry however that many of us are guilty at times (some of us numerous times) of tackling the mountain we call life in much the same way. We often lack direction and insight to life’s challenges and/or feel unprepared or unable to do those things we want to do. Not only do Paul’s words in 2 Timothy serve as the theoretical basis for our understanding of the source of scripture, but they also point to the practical application of applying the scriptures. You see, the scriptures are able to give us both a guide and the right equipment to complete the journey God has for us. He has graciously provided a how-to manual for victorious living here on earth through the reading of His word. Life, like Mt. Everest, is a long journey and a very difficult one at times. We need only to spend time in the scriptures to avoid showing up alone at the base of Mt. Everest dressed for the beach.

One of the ways in which we show others that we are interested in something is by the amount of time we spend on it and how much we know about the subject. Similarly, if we love God we will apply ourselves to the reading of scripture so that we may know more and more about God. If we neglect the reading of scripture we are missing out on one of the primary ways in which God reveals Himself to us. Time in the Word will give us the mission in life and the methods for achieving it.

Closing Prayer:

God, thank You for the Bible that we, through the help of the Holy Spirit, may know You and the salvation You offer and be equipped for the good works You have planned for us to do. Help me to put aside those things that keep me from Your word that I may reap the blessings.
