Mark Your Mark - Week 1 - Day 4

Opening Prayer

Father God, open my heart to your Word. Help my eyes to see, and my heart to draw closer to you. Amen.

Read: Galatians 5:22-23a

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (ESV)

Among other things, these verses tell us that a follower of Jesus will be “self-controlled”. We’ve all known people on both sides of that fence…those who fly off the handle in an instant, and those who walk a life of consideration and focused on acting like Christ. In Galatians 5:13-17, Paul writes, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.  For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another. But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” (ESV)

Choosing to walk in the Spirit produces a life focused on serving one another and loving others with no reserve. It means a control and laser focus like no other, fully dependent on God’s direction and plan for our lives.

As you meditate on the words of these verses… love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control…ask God to cause them to overflow in your life, your speech, your actions. It’s allowing the Spirit to have his way in you that produces this fruit that points the way to Jesus. Each day this week, focus on a new word from this list and consider how you can show that fruit to others.

Closing Prayer:

Dear Father, I ask that you cause my life to overflow this week, pouring the fruit of your Spirit into everything I do. May my speech and actions be filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. It’s only because of you, Father! Amen!
