Make Your Mark - Week 1 - Day 1
Father, shine a light on these verses and help me to understand your next steps for me. Illuminate your Word in my heart.
Read: 2 Timothy 1:6
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” (ESV)
Read: Romans 12:11
“Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.” (ESV)
If you’ve ever tried to start a fire, whether at a campsite or in a wood-burning fireplace, you know there’s some specific steps you have to take to get it set up, then add the ignitor, then tend it while it builds a strong flame. If you skip steps or take shortcuts, there’s probably going to be a fair amount of frustration at the results, and the fire may fizzle out quickly.
So it is in these verses from 2 Timothy and Romans. We’re reminded by Paul that the gifts God has given us aren’t just an “unpack and go” type of thing. Instead, we need to tend to them, harness those abilities, and stretch those spiritual muscles to make them strong and useful. It’s going to mean being intentional in using those gifts, and most likely, living outside of our comfort zone.
Followers of Jesus must make the effort to nurture zeal and enthusiasm for his kingdom, just as a fire needs attention to keep it healthy and burning.
He plans on doing great things through our gifts…are we ready?
Consider the spiritual gifts God has given you. Are you currently using those gifts to build his kingdom? If not, what’s holding you back? Be honest with yourself and with God. It’s going to take effort and intentionally putting yourself in situations where you get to stretch the muscles of those gifts. God has great things planned for you to do if you’ll partner with Him.
Lord, I trust you. I desire to give everything you want from me, but there are a lot of unknowns. Help me to step out in faith and use the gifts you’ve given to me to build your Kingdom. Amen.
