You Can Live Well - Day 1
Lord, please open my heart to receive the word you would have me hear today.
Read: Titus 2:1-2 (HCSB)
“…say the things that are consistent with sound teaching. Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance.”
In ages past, communities considered the older members of their society to be the keepers of wisdom. These elders were held in high regard and carried the responsibility of passing along their knowledge to younger generations. There are still areas in other parts of the world where oral teaching by elders is the primary educational system for children who live in those tribal areas.
In today’s passage, the apostle Paul is encouraging Titus to find older men of honor to be the teachers and leaders for their communities. His qualifications might seem obvious, but they still set a challenge for determining a person’s worthiness to be a teacher and leader.
Level headed. Sensible. Sound in faith. Loving. Patient (enduring). All adding up to being worthy of respect.
A good leader will model these right behaviors for those who follow to imitate.
Do you consider yourself to be a bit on the older side of the age scale? If so, find a way to become engaged in helping those of a younger generation learn from whatever wisdom you have gained in life.
Father, thank you for these words from Paul. Help me to see the opportunities around me to share your wisdom and love with those who desire to learn from what my elders have shared with me.
