Heaven 101: Week 2 - Day 1

Opening Prayer:

Lord Jesus, give me Your wisdom to make personal application from this scripture today.

Read: Hebrews 11:39-40 NIV

“These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect.”

Reflect:

Reading through Hebrews 11 is like visiting the Biblical Hall of Fame.  Each of these individuals leave a distinctive example for our lives.  While I never met with any of them, I feel like I have had a personal encounter with them anyway because of the years I have had studying and hearing about them.  I look forward to the opportunity I will have to meet them up close and personal when I get to heaven.  Randy Alcorn in his book Heaven suggests we make a list of who we want to meet with in Heaven.

While I would like to have some time with these great men and women, I also have a personal list of individuals I hope to spend time with.  They are on my spiritual hall of fame list.  Each of these had an influence on my personal spiritual walk.  These are individuals that I so often wish I could sit down and have a good discussion about any variety of Biblical and spiritual subjects, but I can’t because they have gone to be with the Lord.

There are several I could name but I will just list a few.  One individual is my mother-in-law who always wanted to know what I was teaching or reading.  What great talks we had, and they definitely helped sharpen my Christian walk.  My car pool colleagues (all Bible professors), from my time teaching at San Jose Bible College, really stretched my Christian walk through the discussions we had on the 40-minute ride to the college, each way.  They never looked down on this secular educated person but treated me as an equal.  I look forward to sharing with them when I get there.

As with the Scriptural Hall of Famers, we don’t know what to expect in relationships when we get to Heaven, but we can look forward to some rich times of fellowship with all who have gone before us.

Apply:

Take some time this week to think about those who are part of your personal Spiritual Hall of Fame and about the rich relationships you had with them. More importantly, think about the great reunion you will have when you reach Heaven.  While this reunion with friends and family will be special, greater still is that you will be able to spend unlimited time with the Lord, the three in one.  I Thessalonians 4:17 says, “After that, we who are still alive and left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so, we will be with the Lord forever.”

What a great reunion we look forward to as followers of Christ!  It can’t get any better than this.

Closing Prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank You for the example of Spiritual giants who paved the way before us.  They set the bar high and that’s good!  Help us to have their kind of faith no matter what we face here on earth.
