Unfinished Life: Week 1 - Day 1

Father God. Thank you for the assurance that no matter what this day brings you are with me and watching over me.  Help me act and talk in ways that match with who you have called me to be. Amen.

READ: Psalm 23:1-3 (NIV)

"The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.  He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake."

Scholars are not certain when David wrote Psalm 23. Many believe it was during the time his son Absalom led a revolt in an effort to dethrone his father and become king of Israel.  When David received word of Absalom’s success in gathering support from “all Israel” (II Samuel 15:13) and his plans to attack Jerusalem, David gathers his household and flees the city.

David was no stranger to hostility. He experienced it early in his life when king Saul became jealous and angry when it was revealed that David was God’s anointed one.  Saul hunted David and his men forcing them into desolate territory and causing them to live in caves.

In Psalm 23, David is reminding himself, and us, of God’s protection and provision. This faith song speaks to David’s heart assuring him that no matter the circumstances, his shepherd, the Lord God Almighty, watches over and cares for him.

These same words of comfort and encouragement remind us that we can trust God’s love and care regardless of the challenges and threats we face in life.

Lord I am blessed by your care and your grace. Strengthen my confidence in you and keep me aware of your presence and your protection regardless of my life circumstances. You are a great and mighty God and I will trust you today. Amen
