Detox: Week 1 - Unwillingness - Day 5

Opening Prayer:

Lord, help us to love one another, even though we don’t want to.  Some people are just hard to love. Help us to see past the bad and grant them grace as you have given us over and over again.

Read: I John 4:18 (NIV)

“There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”

Reflect:

We are unfinished and make mistakes every day.  The hardest part of this passage is that we cannot hate anyone and still love God.  God loves us even when we mess up.  So, guess what? We have to love others, even the unlovable.  WOW, this is hard.  I teach in a school where teenagers say they hate someone every day.  If we have asked God to live in us, then we are complete.  Hate is a very strong word, but in this life we are bound to find those that don’t even like being in the same room with us.  They get tired of us, they don’t like how we talk or dress.  Can you imagine sending your son to die for the entire world!  In the end, many did not like Jesus. They threw stones at him, pierced his side and spat on him.  I know we feel that we are not treated fairly at times or feel rejected by others. We are only to please HIM, not the world.  If we love perfectly like God tells us to, we will have NO Fear. Oh, precious one, we can’t live our life in fear.  This is not the life God has set forth for us. We have to be bold and love one another, even when it’s the hardest thing to do.  The spirit lives in us and enables the feeling that we need to overcome the negative.  At times I just call out to Jesus to help me make it through a tough situation and immediately I feel the calmness come over my body.  You can feel this wonderful feeling just as I do.  Love (period).  I am working on it, are you?

Apply:

Make a list of the unlovable people in your life that you see day to day.  Pray for God to make you love them and record what happens.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, I know we need you to show us how to love unconditionally.  We cannot do it without you.  Thank you for stretching us.
