Detox: Week 3 - Pride - Day 5

Opening Prayer:

Heavenly father, thank you for all that you provide.  I pray that as I meditate on your word, you will reveal your purpose in each truth and that I would always seek to do your will.  Amen.

Read: 1 John 2:16 – 17 (NKJV)

16. “For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life-- is not of the Father but is of the world. 17. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it, but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

Reflect:

God desires to free us from pride so that we may be free to do his will. These verses remind me of the encounter that Jesus had with the rich young ruler in Matthew 19:16-22.  “Now behold, one came and said to him, Good Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have eternal life?  So, he said to him, why do you call me good? No one is good but one, that is, God. But if you want to enter into life, keep the Commandments. He said to him, Which ones? Jesus said, You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, honor your father and mother, and, you shall love your neighbor as yourself.   The young man said to him, all these things I have kept from my youth. What do I still lack? Jesus said to him, If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; And come, follow Me.  But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.”

Apply:

What was the real challenge for this man?  Do you see yourself in this story? He was not willing to give up his worldly possessions and wealth. It appears that pride is a major contributor to this man's demise. He seems to be blinded by his own material status.  Jesus teaches us;  “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also”. Matthew 6 19 - 21. NKJV.

Closing Prayer:

Father, help me to always be mindful of things in my life that would hinder me from hearing your voice and keeping me from your will.  Help my worship to be pure so that your will, and not mine, will be done.  Amen.
