The Unfinished Life Perseveres, Doesn’t Quit - Day 4

Opening Prayer:

Father God, I come humbly before you as your child. Let me hear your voice and teach me through your word. Let your word be branded in my heart and be the blood that gives me life today. Thank you, Lord for the blessing of this moment! In Jesus’ beautiful name I pray, Amen.

Read: John 17: 20-21 NIV

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

Many centuries ago, ancient China built a mighty wall (the Great Wall of China) to secure its borders from all invaders. It was too high to climb over, too long to go around, and too thick to bust through. They were successful in their mission, so they thought anyway. Within the first 100 years of its existence, China was invaded three different times. How? There was a break in the ranks, a break in unity when a gatekeeper was bribed. The enemy found someone who wasn’t unified with its leadership and walked right through an open gate.

When the Church diminishes the importance of unity, it risked being invaded by the enemy. It risked being overrun through an open gate. In this passage, Jesus is praying for a divine unity for all the church, all it’s people. When the church is united as Jesus is with the Father, it possesses the most powerful tools of evangelism there is to a lost, broken, and dying world. The churches unity in Christ will draw the world to the Gospel.

Know that you are “the church” and that if you are not unified in Christ, you will allow the enemy to walk right through the gate of your home, your work place, and your church, causing great destruction. Love, forgive, show mercy and compassion, and give grace – unite with Jesus and your fellow Christians and be a witness to this world.

Closing Prayer:

Lord God, clear my mind of anything that distracts me from being united with my Savior, Jesus Christ, and united with the rest of the church. As it says in your word, let me be of the same mind, have the same love, and be in full accord and of one mind with you! I pray I will be a witness to this dark world, forever glorifying your name. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
