Jesus Is: Week 2 - Day 3

Opening Prayer:

Lord, help me see how important children were to you. Amen

Read: Matthew 19:14-15 (NIV)

“Jesus said, ‘Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.’ When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there.”

Children were very important to Christ. as demonstrated in today’s Scripture.  The disciples, in the effort to protect Jesus, were trying to keep the children from interrupting him.  But he knew the value of children and wanted them to be with him.  It is often said we are only one generation away from Christianity disappearing.  What we do in training a child about Jesus will have a lasting influence long into adulthood.

An example of this for me took place during Holy Week when I was in fifth grade.  The memory of this is so vivid I can visualize it today.  We were having a cantata and all the fifth and sixth graders were in the balcony of the auditorium.  Our part in the production was to sing “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.”  I remember belting out the words with all my classmates.  I still get chills up my back when I sing these words:

Christ the Lord is ris’n today, Alleluia!
Sons of men and angels say, Alleluia!
Raise your joys and triumphs high, Alleluia!
Sing, ye heav’ns, and earth, reply, Alleluia!

Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once He died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where thy victory, O grave? Alleluia!

As a result of this experience, celebrating Christ’s crucifixion and resurrection, has become my favorite time of the year.  While my Christian walk has not been a straight line from that time, the memory of this experience has helped draw me back into the fold.  I cannot minimize the impact on my life the many early Christian educational opportunities were.  They all helped me realize how much Jesus cared about me and have left an indelible impression on my life.

During this week, keep in mind how important it is to have children brought to Christ.  Each of us has children, grandchildren, nieces/nephews and neighbors that we can influence for Christ.  He wants to show them his love.  Take advantage of Kidslink and the many children’s programs that are provided at Pathway.  You never know what lasting impressions that will make in the life of a child.

Closing Prayer:

God, as I think through how important children were to you, show me how to put this Scripture into practice: “Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (Proverbs 22:6 KJV) In Christ’s name, Amen.
