Detox Week 4 - Day 2
Father God, I pray for eyes to see and a heart ready to embrace your word. Amen.
READ: Luke 14:26
“If any one comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters – yes, even his own life, he cannot be my disciple.”
Jesus was talking to a crowd that was trying to make up its mind about who Jesus is and how to respond to his teachings. Shortly after he makes this startling statement about hate, he speaks about weighing the cost of starting a construction project or going to war before action is taken.
Basically, he was laying the foundation for what would one day be known to the world as Newtown’s Third Law – “For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction”. Jesus wants people thinking about becoming a Christ follower to understand there will be consequences – sometimes very powerful consequences.
When my husband and I responded to God’s call into full time ministry, my father used this very scripture to question our decision. He wanted to be sure we had thought through uprooting our family and leaving our stable income and comfortable life behind. While we could reply yes, there had been much thought and prayer, the truth is we could never fully know the cost of following Jesus into this decision. But one thing we did know – giving Jesus first place in our life and submitting to his will, his plans, and his purposes would mean sacrifice.
Jesus was not contradicting the Law of Love that guides his followers. He was simply letting them know that nothing, and no one, supersedes his will for our life. Making Jesus Lord of your life is a decision of both blessing and cost.
Father, help me overcome my fear and reluctance to fully trust you as I follow you daily. I want to live out my belief that no one loves me more than you and that nothing comes into my life except what you allow. It is my heart’s desire to make you first in my life. Amen.
