Plot Twist: Week 1 - Day 1

Opening Prayer:

Lord, thank you for the chance to come before you today and to learn about your will for my life. I pray that you would show me what it means to follow you. I pray that I can experience you in a fresh way today.

Read: Luke 8:5,12

“A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up.

“Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts so that they may not believe and be saved.”

Reflect:

The Parable of the Sower is about a farmer scattering seed into 4 different types of soil. Enduring Word Bible Commentary suggests that this parable instead be titled The Parable of the Soils, as the difference is never the seed but the kind of soil it lands on. This first type of soil that Jesus presents is the soil along a path or road that many people travel on. The seed (Word of God) has an opportunity to affect many, but Satan comes along to prevent that from happening. Jesus wants those who are listening to be reminded that there is an enemy of our soul that tries to disrupt people from knowing the Savior in their life. The devil has no shortage of hurts and fears to keep people from being open to the message of Jesus.

Have you ever known someone that would not open their heart to Jesus, no matter the circumstances? Due to past offenses or bias, there will be some who will not consider that Jesus loves them. Hypocrisy and self-righteousness are powerful tools for the devil.  These friends could hear a powerful message, witness a miracle, or even see faith lived out in someone’s life and would still not believe.

Apply:

Consider how your actions and words might be keeping those you know from accepting Jesus. Satan can use our sin as a roadblock for others. We may unknowingly keep someone from experiencing the life-changing power of Jesus because of a hurt or doubt we may have caused. Let’s pray today that God will continue to work on our hearts and show us areas of sin in our life that that might harm others and prevent them from knowing the love and grace of The Father.

Closing Prayer:

Lord, continue to mold my heart and show me areas of my life that may offend others and keep them from you. Focus my life on you and help me submit to your will. Amen.
