FOR... Neighbors - Day 4

Opening Prayer:

Show me today, Lord, what love looks like.  Help me to see who you really are and how much you love me.

Read: 1 Peter 4:8 (NIV)

“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins”.

Reflect:

What does love for each other look like?   I remember attending my dad’s funeral and seeing people from every walk of life in our community show up.  It was interesting to see the scope of his life from those who attended.  One of the older men shared with me that dad had given money to their family at a critical time which prevented them from losing their home.  They were not a big part of community life and when he came to the funeral I wondered why he was there. This family had been invisible to me.  I never knew much about them growing up as they were on the “outside” of my friend circle.  But not to dad, he knew them and loved them not because they had it all together or were attending church but because their need was presented to him and that was God’s alert to do something about it.   It was a wake- up call to me regarding my self- focused and sometimes very judgmental views of people. Dad knew God had forgiven him for much sin and so he had a huge capacity to love others no matter what their situation.

Apply:

Who is in your life that is difficult to love?   Pray for those people today and ask God to show you how to love them.  God’s love was extended to you in the middle of your mess and he wants to use you to extend that love to others in the middle of theirs.

Closing Prayer:

Thank you, God, that while I was still a sinner Christ died for me.  Open my eyes to those around me and help me to love them with action.
