FOR... Cities - Day 1

Opening Prayer:

Lord, give me insights this week as I consider why you have placed me in this place.  Help me discern and follow your will.  Amen

Read: Jeremiah 29:4-5 (NIV)

“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, says to all those I carried into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: ‘Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce’.”

It’s amazing how God sees a person’s life differently than we do.  My wife, daughter and I were enjoying life on the front range of Colorado with a great church, wonderful school to administer, a beautiful view of Long’s Peak and we were quite content with our life.  God had different plans for us and knocked us out of our complacency just as he had done for the Judeans.  They were shipped off to Babylon, where they didn’t want to be.

One day a letter came from a small Christian College in San Jose, CA asking me to apply for a position teaching Christian Education.  California was the last place we wanted to move.  We had heard the horror stories of how bad the schools were, the cost of housing was considerably higher than Colorado and it was a long, long way from parents (Grandparents).  Christian Colleges at that time, also were notorious for not making payroll.

After much prayer and soul searching, we applied, and I took the position.  The move turned out to be a very positive one for the whole family with good schools for our daughter, opportunity to serve God and grow spiritually, and some truly great friends in California.  God proved to us he meant what he said in Jeremiah 29:11, “For I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future.”  This was his promise to the Judeans and it’s his promise to us today.

You may not be where you want to be, but remember God has a reason for you to be here.  Make the most of the opportunity to represent him where you are, keeping Jeremiah 29:11 and the focus Scripture for today in mind. Serve him joyfully wherever he places you.

Closing Prayer:

God, you have given us the privilege of serving you in this place and we can only accomplish this with your strength and guidance.  In your Son’s name, Amen.
